Wellington College has long believed that sport is about more than results, it is about character, commitment and, for some, performing to the highest capacity possible. Last week, that belief was brought vividly to life, as the College celebrated a landmark moment with the first ever cohort of Master’s Sports Scholars and those awarded International Honours.
This recognition follows an extensive 18-month review of the College’s Sports Awards structure so as to better reflect the evolving demands of high-performance sport. The new structure ensures that those operating at the very highest level both within Wellington and on the national and international stage are recognised in a way that truly matches their dedication.
To be named a Master’s Sports Scholar is no small achievement. It represents not only exceptional ability and skill, but also sustained commitment, resilience and ambition. These students balance the rigours of academic life with intense training schedules often competing at elite levels beyond the College. For some, that journey has already taken them onto the international stage.
Among the inaugural group of students, a wide range of disciplines are represented, as outlined here by those achieving Master’s Sports Scholarships:
Cricket – Zaara (W) and Georgia (T)
Golf – Eidan (E) and Jamie (E)
Netball – Freya (T) and Keira (C)
Rugby – Ben (Hl), Elijah (Bn), Rhu (E), Tom (Pn), Pippo (Pn) and Will (L)
Hockey – Charlotte (W)
Shooting – Fabian (M) and Chung Hang (L)
Swimming Sienna (W) and Martha (O)
Those awarded Master’s Sports Scholar with International Honours are also competing at the national level in their sports.
Fencing – Riya (T) and Madison (E)
Hockey – Georgia (Hn), Mia (E), Cecily (O) and Nina (T)

Rugby – Ben (Pn)

A huge congratulations to these students, whose dedication and example will inspire the next generation.
