As another academic year draws to a close, the Summer Term has once again highlighted the exceptional breadth and quality of sport at Wellington College.
From historic firsts and national finals to county titles, representative honours and outstanding House competition, students have embraced every opportunity to challenge themselves, support one another and represent the College with pride.
Cricket has enjoyed one of its most memorable seasons in recent years, with outstanding performances across both the boys’ and girls’ programmes. One of the defining moments of the summer came as the first girls in Wellington College history earned places on the College’s Cricket Honours Boards, a landmark achievement that reflects both exceptional individual performances and the continued growth of girls’ cricket at Wellington.
There were many other highlights across the cricket programme. The girls’ season began with an excellent set of results, including a memorable 1st XI victory over Cranleigh and strong performances across the age groups. The U14 girls enjoyed a superb tour, recording wins against Oakham, Repton and Shrewsbury, while the U15A girls produced a memorable win over Brighton. The boys’ programme also delivered outstanding moments, from 1st XI centuries and cup progress to the Yearlings A boys’ exceptional campaign, which culminated in victory in the Berkshire Cup Final against Bradfield College. Olly S took four wickets, Liam P contributed an important 40 and Harry S produced a superb catch as the team ended the season in style.
Tennis has also enjoyed a historic term. The Senior Girls became the first Wellington tennis team to reach the National Finals of the Aberdare Cup, following an excellent 6-0 victory over Oxford High School. The girls’ programme also celebrated success in the Independent Schools Girls’ Tennis League, with the 1st XII winning the event for the first time, while Sophie and Karo won the St George’s Cup and contributed to success in the WIMD Tournament. These achievements reflect the remarkable strength and depth of tennis at the College.
In athletics, students produced a series of excellent performances throughout the term. From Interhouse Athletics and the Potter Pavilion Dash to strong results at county level, Wellington athletes showed both quality and commitment. Edward’s achievements on the track were particularly impressive, including qualification for English Schools, while Max also secured a place at the championships and Tilly was selected as reserve for the Junior Girls 1500m.
Golf has continued to flourish, with the U15 team winning the National Strokeplay Championships and later reaching a National Final. Ellie also enjoyed an outstanding summer, representing England at the European Nations Cup, finishing tied fourth at the Annika Sörenstam Invitational and earning selection for the England team for the European Girls’ Team Championships.
Across the wider sporting programme, students continued to excel. Wellingtonians represented and competed with distinction in shooting, rowing, swimming, riding, triathlon, lacrosse, powerlifting, hockey and rugby. Martha enjoyed an outstanding swimming season, winning silver in the 200m breaststroke at the Regional Championships and qualifying for the British Championships in July after swimming close to her personal best in the 100m breaststroke. Alongside GB U19 shooting selections, Bethany’s success in powerlifting, Charlotte’s rowing achievements and the triathlon team’s performances at Blenheim and Nottingham, these accomplishments demonstrate the breadth of sporting talent across the College.
House sport has once again played a central role in College life, bringing together students of all abilities in spirited competition. From Kingsleys and Interhouse Football to Tennis, Athletics and the final overall House standings, the programme has provided energy, connection and healthy competition across the College.
A message from Dan Pratt, Director of Sport
“As we reach the end of another academic year, I would like to congratulate every student who has represented Wellington this term. The Summer Term has been another wonderful example of the energy, commitment and enthusiasm that makes sport such an important part of life at the College.
This has been a summer of genuine milestones. Seeing the first girls’ names added to our Cricket Honours Boards was a hugely significant moment for Wellington and a wonderful reflection of how far our girls’ programme has come. Alongside that, watching our Yearlings A lift the Berkshire Cup, our Senior Girls Tennis team reach a national final for the first time, our U15 golfers achieve national success, and so many students earn county, national and international honours has made this a truly memorable term.
While we are proud of these achievements, what stands out most is the attitude our students show every day. They compete with humility, support one another wholeheartedly and consistently demonstrate the College values of Respect, Integrity, Kindness, Responsibility and Courage.
My sincere thanks go to our outstanding coaches, support staff, parents and everyone who contributes behind the scenes to provide such exceptional opportunities. Most importantly, thank you to our students for embracing every challenge and representing Wellington with such pride throughout the year. We now look forward to building on these successes and welcoming everyone back for another exciting year of Wellington sport.”
As we reflect on another outstanding sporting year, it is clear that Wellington continues to provide an environment where excellence and participation go hand in hand. Congratulations to every student, coach, member of staff and parent who has contributed to such a memorable season.
We wish everyone in the Wellington sporting community a restful summer and look forward to another exciting year of competition, development and success in September.
