The Montgomery Ensemble Competition at Wellington College took place on Tuesday, 15th October, in the Old Gym, kicking off this year’s Arts Festival concerts with a remarkable display of musical talent. This event was adjudicated by the prestigious Solem Quartet, whose members are renowned for their precision and spirit in the world of chamber music.

The Montgomery Competition, founded in 1964 by Brigadier A.H. Montgomery, continues to foster the growth of future musicianship at Wellington College. For 2024, two new categories were introduced: the Contemporary and Ensemble competitions, broadening the scope of this long-standing tradition.

In this year’s competition, Wellington Violin Quartet—comprised of Sarah K, Elena T, Nicholas M-Z and Natalie Z—secured the top spot with their outstanding performance of Telemann’s Quartet for Four Violins in G Major. Their rendition captured the essence of Telemann’s intricate composition, earning them high praise from the Solem Quartet.

The Saxophone Quartet, featuring Reuben K, Keely L, Joseph B and Ronit T, emerged as the runners-up. Their dynamic interpretation of The Bare Necessities, arranged by J. Kernen, showcased their versatility and ability to breathe new life into familiar melodies.

The Montgomery Ensemble Competition continues to be a highlight of Wellington College’s musical calendar, providing a platform for young musicians to showcase their talents and receive invaluable feedback from industry professionals.

Wellington College congratulates all participants and looks forward to future competitions where musical excellence will undoubtedly thrive.
