Talent takes you so far… Guts the rest. – Will Greenwood

In the last week of the Lent term, the rugby club descended on the Rosslyn Park 7s competition. We had five sides playing with over 50 Wellingtonians representing the College throughout the week.

The seniors competed well in the Vase on day one losing out in a close game to Solihull so therefore not progressing. The Colts won every game during their first day and reached the quarter-finals on day two before meeting the eventual winners, Harrow School.

The yearlings also matched this great achievement but left the tournament at the quarter-final stage after losing to Brighton College. A moment that highlighted the camaraderie of the week was before the yearlings’ Quarter Final. JL and HH on the bags for their brothers and the rest of the squad getting around them (View HERE.).

On Friday, it was the turn of the girls VII all playing their first-ever games of rugby. After learning a lot of the laws in game one, they scored some brilliant tries in games two and three before bowing out of their own competition.

The final competition of the week was the Cup for the First VII. Led brilliantly by Samm (T) and Henry (Hl), the team worked tirelessly for each other and had to overcome a 10-0 deficit in the quarter-final to progress to what would be a very special final against Millfield.

NextGenXV shared a report of the day which describe the match perfectly:

The Berkshire side were utterly brilliant in the final, responding to going 12-0 down to a Millfield start that had been the names on the lips of those in attendance all afternoon, with a flurry of tries in front of a huge crowd in the early evening sunshine as they bounced back for a brilliant 35-19 victory.

It was stunning stuff, a first victory at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s since 2015, and it was against Millfield that the signature performance there came too. There is something about Wellington College and Millfield here at the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s, when those to are in the mix, magic ensues.

A fantastic achievement for all twelve players involved. The club couldn’t be more proud of each and every player in the vase, Colts, yearlings, girls and Cup.
