You may know the College’s main building from The Crown, in which it masquerades as Kensington Palace. But it hasn’t got above its station. The school was established by Royal Charter in 1853, as a living memorial to the Iron Duke himself, but add innovation to its traditions and you have a powerful formula. ‘The opportunities are so broad that everyone can find their niche and thrive,’ says a parent. The College has introduced two practical courses on AI and entrepreneurship, while a new Sixth-form boarding house, the school’s 18th and the first house to be co-ed, has been enhanced by a hub that promotes university-style socialising and learning – and it’s clearly effective, as further education destinations include several Ivy Leaguers. To mark the upcoming milestone of the student complement reaching 50 per cent boys and 50 per cent girls, as well as the 50th anniversary of girls’ first admission, there will be a number of celebrations this year; among them, a trail in the grounds remembering pioneering women of local and global stature, as well as a film about the history of the school, a concert and a specially themed Speech Day. Meanwhile, Sir Anthony Seldon, the former head here, has been appointed founding director of a new global education network (Wellington College Education) comprising this and nine other establishments around the world, and will be aiming to create a unified vision of what responsible, imaginative learning means in the 21st century.
