At Wellington, academic scholarship is an attitude of mind not simply a description of intelligence. It involves fostering intellectual curiosity and humility in our pupils and developing within them a passion for learning and independent thinking. We consider scholars to be representatives of scholarship in the school: they are not just hard workers but have a genuine and sustained interest in academic life beyond the curriculum alone.
At Matriculation it was wonderful to recognise those pupils that truly embody these values. The majority of scholarships are now awarded at the end of Third Form including the seven most prestigious ‘named’ academic scholarships:
- Leo W (Wellesley Scholar)
- Nefeli M (Benson Scholar )
- Tom H (Fisher Scholar)
- Mimi C (West Scholar)
- Tom M (Hughes Scholar)
- Rohan G (Marshall Scholar)
- Chung HK (Governors Scholar)
All scholars gain access to our Academic Scholarship Programme which starts at the end of August with a Cambridge residential. During Michaelmas they follow two short courses looking at the origins of the universe from different perspectives and public speaking, as well as a number of talks and workshops run by external speakers such as ‘AI: friend or foe?’ by Mo Tanweer of Cambridge University. Once again we will be sending a small delegation of Fourth Form scholars to represent Wellington College at the Youth Forum Switzerland in January.
