Hot on the heels of this summer’s IB and A-level successes, Wellington’s Year 11 students have shown they are a true academic force to be reckoned with by achieving the College’s best ever GCSE results. For the first time since the move to numerical grading, not only were over 40% of all grades awarded at top grade 9 level, but over two-thirds were also at 8 or 9, considered to be equivalent to the old A*. 13 students secured straight 9s, 26 recorded at least nine top 9s, and a remarkable 73 weighed in with a total average score of 8.5 points or above. With well over half the cohort sitting on an average of over 8 points, these results are testament to the conscientious way they have approached their studies, and to the inspirational nature of the teaching they received.
Wellington’s Master, James Dahl, was full of praise for them all, and had this to say: “Huge congratulations to the 214 Wellingtonians who are receiving their GCSE results today and who have excelled themselves by securing Wellington’s strongest ever outcomes at this level. We are so proud of this year group which has already achieved so much at the College: the girls were national runners-up in hockey last year; the boys were unbeaten at both 15-a-side and 7-a-side rugby this year, becoming Rosslyn Park champions in March; and so many of this cohort have sparkled on the stage as dancers, actors and musicians of the highest quality. They are a truly brilliant group of young people, both individually and collectively, and I can’t wait to see what they are going to achieve in the Sixth Form!”
