We are delighted to have been shortlisted in two categories in the Boarding Schools’ Association Supporting Excellence Awards 2025.

Tim Head, our Deputy Director of Admissions and Marketing, has been shortlisted for the ‘Steven Winkley Award’ which commends the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the cause of boarding.

A much-loved and influential figure at Wellington, Tim started out as an English teacher in 1986 and has subsequently taken on countless roles, proving to be, as one colleague put it, “one of the strongest advocates for a boarding education.”

Tim has been Housemaster of Beresford, a tutor, coached cricket and hockey, helped with golf, and been heavily involved in the CCF.  He also edits the Yearbook and has served on the Arts Committee.

Asking staff, alumni and pupils what Tim means to the College resulted in an outpouring of positive testimonials.  William (10bl) said: “His nomination for this award is absolutely fitting as he is an amazing tutor, and someone who has given so much back to our community. I understand this may seem silly, but his contributions and support for my wellbeing and academics are something that I appreciate more than what I can put into words”

Sam Owen, Housemaster of the Blücher said “In an age where it is too easy to get lost in box ticking, form filling, and project managing, Tim is all about the individual.”

The second category Wellington is shortlisted in is the ‘Belonging and Inclusion Initiative Award’ for our Inclusion Ambassadors programme.  It was launched in 2022 to enhance the sense of belonging in our boarding Houses through student voice and leadership.

Each year, two students per House are trained as Inclusion Ambassadors, acting as advocates within their communities. Their work integrates with our Celebrations Calendar, which aims to increase awareness and representation for minority groups. Findings from our annual ‘Staying Safe’ survey have shown significant impact: 96% of students feel they are taught to understand and value diversity, an increase since 2022. Similarly, 96% feel valued for who they are, marking a 6% rise. Moreover, students now rate their Houses as the most inclusive spaces in the College.

Award winners will be announced at the BSA Annual Conference for Heads at York Racecourse on the evening of the 6th May.
