On 10 February, pupils marked Safer Internet Day with a College assembly focused on this year’s theme: AI.

Led nationally by the UK Safer Internet Centre, Safer Internet Day encourages schools and families to reflect on how young people experience the online world and how we can work together to make it safer and more positive.

At Wellington College, pupils explored what AI is and what it is not during assembly. Through a pupil-led presentation, they shared their thoughts on the subject, clearly explaining the fundamentals of artificial intelligence and helping their peers understand how these systems work.

The presentation balanced opportunity with critical reflection. Pupils considered positive applications of AI, such as environmental monitoring and accessibility tools, alongside important areas of debate, including:

  • The impact of AI on future employment

  • The appropriate use of generative AI in academic work

  • The risks posed by misinformation and deepfakes

  • The reliability of AI-generated health or wellbeing advice

  • The environmental footprint of large-scale data centres

A key message was that there is no single “correct” way to engage with AI. Some young people may wish to explore it deeply or use it selectively or cautiously. The emphasis was on informed and responsible decision-making.

Pupils were also reminded that if anything they encounter online causes concern, there are multiple avenues of pastoral support available within the College.

To extend the conversation beyond the assembly, pupils were invited to take part in two Safer Internet Day competitions.

AI or Not?

In this challenge, pupils were asked to distinguish between real images and those generated by AI. The images were deliberately difficult, encouraging careful observation and critical thinking.

Wellington in 100 Years

Pupils were also invited to let their imagination run wild responsibly by using AI to generate an image of what Wellington might look like a century from now.

Entries were reviewed by a Lower Sixth judging panel, who selected a winning submission based on creativity, originality and thoughtful use of the technology.

Congratulations to Arul K for producing the winning image.
