As part of Wellington College’s commitment to Global Citizenship, a group of pupils has been working closely with Bracknell Forest Council to support the local refugee community. Their latest initiative, a toy drive for over 300 Afghan refugees arriving in the coming weeks, has seen an incredible response from the Wellington community.

What began earlier this year as a pupil-led outreach project quickly evolved into a meaningful and ongoing partnership with the council. Initially, the students ran weekly activity sessions for two young Ukrainian girls, including jewellery-making, baking, and games. These sessions have not only offered joy and companionship but have also given the pupils a deeper understanding of the refugee experience.

Building on the success of this initiative, the council recently approached the students over the Easter break with a new challenge: to coordinate a toy drive for the hundreds of Afghan refugees due to arrive in Bracknell. Without hesitation, the pupils rose to the occasion.

The team have been overwhelmed with the response and have been busy organising the four-figure number of toys received. Donations of new or nearly-new toys, games, and arts and crafts sets have poured in from students and staff alike, ready to be delivered to families in need.

“The response from the Wellington community has been absolutely amazing,” said one of the students involved in the project. “We hope these gifts will help the families feel a little more at home as they settle into a new life here.”

We are incredibly proud of the team — your actions embody the very best of Wellington’s values.
