Wellington College is delighted to announce that Woodland Quad has been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects South Awards 2026.
Part of the College’s long term estate masterplan, Woodland Quad brings together Elizabeth House, a Co-educational Sixth Form boarding house, Raglan, a boys’ day house, and a central renewable energy centre, creating a distinctive new area within the historic Crowthorne campus
For Raglan, the move has been transformative. Now located at the heart of the College, the House sits firmly at the centre of Wellington life, strengthening its identity and connection to the wider community. Clayton (13 R) reflects: “The new house, as well as its location, has had a noticeable impact on all aspects of College life, with easier access to places like the library, V&A, and the new Sixth Form Centre. Many feel far more integrated within the College community, with a greater number of pupils choosing to take part in societies or fireside talks that run during the evening. Outside of academics, several pupils spend time with members of the neighbouring Elizabeth House, playing darts, pool, and table tennis during their downtime.”

The development has been recognised for its architectural quality and strong sustainability credentials. Built using cross laminated timber and other low carbon materials, the buildings reduce embodied carbon while providing calm, uplifting spaces for pupils. A ground source heat pump array now supplies low carbon heating to Woodland Quad and to the College’s Victorian buildings, marking important progress towards Wellington’s carbon neutrality ambitions.
The Elizabeth House has already had a significant impact on Sixth Form life. Precious (12 E) states that the “Elizabeth House has really helped create a strong sense of community in the Sixth Form… it’s been great to be part of that.” Cara (12 E) adds that the design “encourages interaction and inclusivity,” helping to foster a strong house identity.
Head of Sixth Form, Fleur Moore Bridger, says, “The Elizabeth House has done wonders for co-educational integration and for promoting the university stepping stone feel of our Sixth Form… I feel very grateful that we can provide a space where boys and girls can work and live together.” Woodland Quad is one of 13 projects shortlisted across the South region. Regional winners will be announced later this spring, with successful schemes going on to be considered for National Awards and, ultimately, the RIBA Stirling Prize.
The College extends its congratulations to MICA and all those involved in bringing this project together.
