Student voice at Wellington is about more than being heard; it is about giving young people meaningful opportunities to shape their communities, work collaboratively and turn ideas into action.

Through WellySpeaks, this approach is now reaching beyond Crowthorne. Students have worked collaboratively with pupils across the Wellington family of schools to create a new film exploring student leadership and sharing perspectives from across our international community.

The film brings together voices from across the Wellington College Education, demonstrating the value of connection, collaboration and learning from one another.

At Wellington College, we believe that the best school communities are built with students, not simply for them. Student voice has always been a valued part of College life, but WellySpeaks has strengthened and expanded the opportunities for students to contribute to decision-making. By creating a highly visible, student-led platform, the initiative ensures that student perspectives continue to play a central role in shaping life at Wellington.

More than a traditional student council, WellySpeaks empowers students to influence the aspects of College life that matter most to them. From wellbeing and inclusion to community initiatives and daily student experience, it ensures students play an active role in shaping the future of the College.

Student voice is often discussed in education, but meaningful participation requires more than simply asking for opinions. At Wellington, the focus is on creating structures that allow students to contribute to decision-making in a genuine and visible way.

WellySpeaks is built around three key strands: Wellbeing, College Life and Relationships. Led by Lower Sixth students, each strand provides opportunities for students to gather feedback, identify priorities and work collaboratively with staff to turn ideas into action.

The model extends across the College community. In the Lower School, Prisms provides students in Third, Fourth and Fifth Form with their own platform for leadership and representation, while Mental Health Ambassadors and Relationships and Inclusion Ambassadors help ensure that student perspectives are embedded within everyday school and boarding life.

Regular meetings, open dialogue with senior leaders and direct engagement with the Executive Leadership Team demonstrate a shared commitment to listening and responding to student perspectives.

One of the most powerful aspects of WellySpeaks is the sense of partnership it fosters between students and staff.

Students are encouraged to raise ideas, challenge assumptions and contribute constructively to discussions about school life. Through assemblies, surveys, focus groups, House discussions and committee meetings, students across the College are able to share their views, regardless of whether they hold a formal leadership position.

Equally important is the College’s commitment to closing the feedback loop. Students are shown how their suggestions have influenced decisions and developments, reinforcing trust and demonstrating that their contributions have a tangible impact.

This culture of accountability helps students develop confidence, leadership skills and a sense of ownership over their community.

The impact of WellySpeaks can be seen across many areas of College life.

Student input has helped shape Wellbeing Festivals and themed wellbeing initiatives, while the introduction of a dedicated wellbeing area on the College intranet has improved access to support and resources.

Students have also played a leading role in supporting transition into Wellington College, creating welcome videos, developing a Student Guide to Wellington College and participating in transition panels to help new students feel informed, supported and connected from the outset.

Across the College, feedback has led to practical improvements in everyday student experience, including clearer signage around food provision and student services. Meanwhile, a College-wide Anti-Bullying Week focused on kindness culminated in House kindness pledges displayed throughout the school, reinforcing a culture of respect and belonging.

Within teaching and learning, students have contributed ideas around classroom environments and collaborative seating arrangements designed to strengthen inclusion and peer relationships.

Looking beyond Wellington, WellySpeaks is now helping to build connections across the wider Wellington family. Students have led the creation of a film, working collaboratively with Wellington College schools around the world to bring together perspectives from across our international community and encourage dialogue, shared learning and the exchange of leadership ideas.

The value of student voice extends far beyond school improvement. Through WellySpeaks, students develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives: communication, leadership, collaboration, critical thinking and the confidence to engage with complex issues.

By creating opportunities for students to participate meaningfully in decision-making, Wellington College is helping young people understand that leadership is not about holding a title but about making a positive difference within a community.

As schools continue to explore how best to engage young people in shaping their educational experience, WellySpeaks offers a powerful example of what can be achieved when students are trusted as partners in the life of a school.

This approach was recently recognised with a special mention in the Student Voice category at the Education Choices Awards, highlighting the impact of a model that places student participation at the heart of school life. For Wellington College, however, the true measure of success is not external recognition but seeing students empowered to shape the community they belong to every day.
