Wellington College tennis has enjoyed a successful season across all levels, with standout performances from senior players and significant development opportunities for our junior squads.

Last week’s Team of the Week accolade was awarded to not one but two senior tennis teams for outstanding achievements.

A huge congratulations goes to Jess T and Anna R who won the prestigious St George’s Cup on the grass courts of MCS Oxford – bringing the trophy home to Wellington for the first time. Battling through the heat, the duo played six sets against six different schools and won them all. Their victory in a final-set tie-break was a fitting end to a day of incredible focus and determination.

Meanwhile, the 1st Mixed Tennis Team also delivered a superb performance in the Wellington College Invitational Mixed Tournament, emerging victorious against strong opposition from Sevenoaks, Epsom, Cranleigh, and Haileybury. This marks just the second time in six years that the trophy has remained at Wellington, highlighting the depth and consistency of the squad.

Elsewhere, ten U14 girls embarked on a tennis tour packed with learning and competition. Facing tough fixtures against Cheltenham Ladies’ College and Oakham School, the girls showed grit and a fighting spirit, often playing against older, more experienced opponents.

A high-performance training session at Loughborough University between matches gave the players a professional-level environment to sharpen their skills – an experience that paid dividends in their improved play against Oakham. The tour finished with a dazzling display of tennis in the heat at the Nottingham Open. A pro, grass-court lead-up event to Wimbledon.

Throughout the tour, the girls demonstrated commitment, growth, and joy in the sport, making it a highly successful and enriching experience.

Not to be outdone, the U14 boys’ team also enjoyed a hugely positive tennis tour, blending competition, elite training, and exposure to professional tennis.

The tour began with a strong 6–3 win over Clifton College, showcasing confident shot-making and excellent teamwork. Day two saw the boys train with performance coaches at Bath University, gaining great value from a high-volume, high-quality session that pushed their technical and tactical abilities.

They then faced a formidable U15 side at Prior Park, where, in sweltering heat, every final pairing went to a tie break in a thrilling 5–4 loss. Despite the result, the team demonstrated exceptional resilience and mental toughness, giving it their all in every match.

Like the girls, the boys wrapped up their week at the Nottingham Open, watching professional players in action and representing Wellington with pride throughout the day.

From elite performances and trophy wins to character-building tours and elite training opportunities, Wellington’s tennis programme continues to go from strength to strength. This season has showcased not just talent, but also the values that underpin success – teamwork, perseverance, and a love of the game.

Well played!
