Wellington College are proud to celebrate the success of our U18 Boys who were crowned Cup champions at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens securing the title for the first time since 2022 following one of the most demanding and fiercely contested campaigns in recent memory.
From the outset the squad demonstrated exceptional resilience navigating two intensely competitive pool stages across the opening days. These early challenges proved invaluable preparation for the knockout rounds where composure character and unity defined their performances.
In the final Wellington College faced a formidable Whitgift side. In a match played at relentless intensity Whitgift applied sustained pressure but Wellington’s defensive discipline and determination held firm. Leading 14–7 in the second half the team produced a defining moment withstanding a prolonged attacking spell before finding the energy and clarity for a decisive breakaway try. The resulting 19–7 victory secured the title in emphatic fashion and underlined the team’s ability to deliver under pressure.
The semi-final encounter against Sedbergh was equally compelling. Having narrowly won their earlier meeting 17–12 Wellington once again edged a fiercely competitive contest emerging 15–12 winners in a match that reflected the very highest standards of schoolboy rugby.
Earlier in the competition Wellington College topped a highly competitive group that included Sedbergh Warwick and Cheltenham College. A crucial opening victory over Sedbergh set the tone followed by assured performances that confirmed their place in the knockout stages.
This achievement represents a significant milestone in Wellington College’s proud rugby tradition. To add the National Schools 7s title to recent success at the St Joseph’s Festival is a remarkable accomplishment highlighting the programme’s strength across both formats of the game.
The 2025/26 squad have firmly established themselves as one of the great Wellington College teams. Their commitment resilience and excellence throughout the competition ensure they will be remembered for many years to come.
