The HM
Emma-Jayne Haining became the Housemistress of Anglesey following her return to the College after 10 years away. Emma-Jayne began her teaching career at Wellington College in 2007 as an Art teacher, having initially embarked on a career in the London fashion industry. During these five years, she was Assistant HM of the Combermere and Beresford as well as Head of Third Form. Emma-Jayne returned to Wellington after working away in various other boarding schools, including Roedean School as Senior Housemistress and Head of Year, and Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Perth, Western Australia, where she held the position of Deputy Head of Senior School for Sixth Form students.
Emma-Jayne is joined in Anglesey by her husband Lee, who works as a Buildings Surveyor within a local authority, and their two children, Sam (13) and Amelia (10). Watching Sam and Amelia perform on stage is a particular highlight for the family, as well as exploring new cultures through their travels.
Emma-Jayne completed an MA in School Leadership of Mental Health and Wellbeing with Distinction in 2022; she is passionate about individualised pastoral care within education and believes in the importance of establishing strong and supportive relationships with girls and their families.
The House
Purpose-built, the layout of the House is unique and it is often said that the Anglesey must have been designed by a schoolmaster rather than an architect. All rooms are located around a central living area known as the ‘Atrium’ and the fact that single and double rooms are scattered throughout means that girls of all ages are dotted evenly around the House, thereby avoiding areas dedicated to a specific year group. Consequently and quite naturally, a strong sense of belonging and community spirit permeates the House without any sense of hierarchy between the years.
There are 70 girls in the Anglesey who pride themselves in their full involvement in all aspects of school life. Strong representation in all major teams reflects the importance of sport in the life of the House, although the Anglesey also has a strong reputation in the Arts with a tradition of choristers, thespians, musicians, dancers and artists.
