Wellington College is proud to have won the Wellbeing and Mental Health Initiative Award at the Boarding Schools’ Association Supporting Excellence Awards 2026.
Now in its ninth year, the awards celebrate innovation and best practice across the boarding sector. The judges praised Wellington’s approach, commenting:
“The appointment of a Head of Wellness and Physical Fitness is an interesting and innovative concept which recognises a commitment to meaningful change and development.”
Wellington College has long placed wellbeing at the heart of school life. In 2006, it became the first school in the UK to introduce a dedicated course in happiness and wellbeing, a bold and pioneering step that sparked significant interest both nationally and internationally. Nearly two decades on, that commitment remains as strong as ever, with a clear and enduring aim: to promote the flourishing and excellence of every student in our care.
A key development has been the appointment of Mike Wyndham as Head of Wellness and Physical Fitness in April 2025. Working closely with pastoral and sports staff, Mike has introduced a range of initiatives supporting physical and mental health across the College community. His role strengthens an already well-established foundation, bringing together the many strands of wellbeing across the College while driving a culture of continual improvement, recognising that there is always more we can do to better support our students.
Recent developments include healthier food choices and nutrition education, greater awareness of screen time and digital habits, expanded opportunities for inclusive physical activity, and community initiatives such as the popular ‘Maniacs’ cold plunge and early morning run.
The College has also introduced TJ Power’s DOSE framework, helping pupils understand how movement, sleep, connection and screen use can positively influence their wellbeing.
Mike Wyndham, Head of Wellness and Physical Fitness, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been recognised with the BSA Wellbeing and Mental Health Initiative Award. This award reflects our whole‑school commitment to placing wellbeing at the heart of everyday college life and ensuring that every pupil feels supported, valued, and able to flourish.”
This award reflects Wellington College’s ongoing commitment to creating an environment in which every pupil can thrive academically, physically and emotionally.
